We hope to take off from Damyns Hall on 15th January 2009. Damyns Hall is a private airfield with one grass runway which is 600 meters long. We have a flying school base there and operate single engined ultralight aircraft and helicopters. During the summer we have hang gliders being towed up by microlight aircraft for joy rides. We operate under and around some of the worlds busiest airspaces at London City Airport, Heathrow, Stansted, Luton, Biggin Hill and are pleased to say that we have the same professional help and assistance given to us by all the Air traffic control centres as any other commercial airliner.
After take off from Damyns Hall we will fly over very familiar and interesting areas over the QE 2 bridge over the River Thames; passing over the River Medway and Rochester.
The Medway was the birthplace of the flying boats that pioneered the aviation routes around the world since the early 1920's. We will cruise over the Weald of Kent, Brands Hatch motor racing circuit, Leeds Castle with its impressive moat and turrets and a maze made of hedgerows. Dover Castle and harbour should come into view in about 40 minutes after takeoff. On a good day, one can see the coast of France from about 30 miles away at 3000 feet.
London information usually ask you to squawk 1071 and call coasting out at Dover on this route to Abbeville. Once you are mid channel you change to French ATC. They are used to hundreds of British, French, Belge, German aircraft criss-crossing the Channel on a good flying weekend and sometimes ignore the calls from familiar aircraft if they are too busy!
This is a picture of our entire route and we hope to load more photos as we start our flight and give more details about the acutal route taken. Please visit these pages often to keep track.
